How to Use a Golf Range Finders Effectively
Golf range finders are devices that allow you to measure the distance from where you are to the hole that you are targeting on the golf course. Generally there are 2 types of golf range finders – the laser ones and the GPS ones. Laser golf range finders are easy to use and straightforward while GPS golf range finders require a map of the golf that you are on before you can determine the distance to the hole or any other points.
How to Effectively Use Golf Range Finders
Below are some points to allow you to effectively use the 2 types of golf range finders:
A. GPS Golf Range finders
- Load the map of the course that you are going to play on before leaving your house. This will save you a lot of time and also to avoid the frustration in case you do not have the map stored in the device.
- Turn on the range finder and allow the GPS satellite to determine your location on the golf course.
- Select the hole that you are going to play and the available target, most GPS golf range finders have the distance from the target to the pin predefined in the system.
- After you have completed one hole most device will automatically show you to the next hole on the course, as defined in the system. However, if you are not playing your game in that order you can manually choose the hole that you are targeting next to measure the distance.

B. Laser Golf Range Finders
- When using laser golf range finders make sure that the target you are measuring is in view and all you need to do is to aim the range finder at the object that you are measuring through the view port.
- Once the target is in sight, pull the range finder trigger and a laser will be sent to the target.
- System will then return the distance on the range finder display. If you see an error message on the display it is likely that you did not lock on to the target properly, in this case, all you have to do is to just start over again.
Pros and Cons of the 2 Types of Golf Range Finders
Finally, laser golf range finders are much easier to use and you do not need to subscribe to any update services because you do not need a course mapping service to help you with information on the golf course you are playing on.
GPS golf range finders, on the other, would require a map and in order to get regular updates or new maps you would have to subscribe to a mapping service, if not, you would not be able to get any update if there were any changes to the golf course you are going to play on.
